Children’s day and Elders’ day Message

Sri Lanka marks national Children’s Day on October 1, the same day as the International Day of Older Persons. Children are at the beginning of their journey in life while the elderly are nearing the end of that journey. Children represent our future while the elderly are our conscience. Both the children as well as the elderly need the special attention of society. We in Sri Lanka can be proud of the fact that we are and have always been, a very child-friendly culture. Thanks in large part to the social and economic and also demographic changes that have taken place over the past decades, we can be proud of the fact that there are far fewer street children in Sri Lanka than in most other countries.

Very few children have been deprived of an education and child labour has been stamped out to a large extent. Yet with the changes taking place in society, new issues relating to children have come up such as the incidence of drug abuse among school going children and the harmful influences of the internet. A creative and concerted drive to educate school children on the dangers of drug abuse and avoiding the pitfalls of the internet is needed. In the case of the elderly, the changing nature of Sri Lankan society over the past couple of decades has created a raft of problems. We have been a culture that always looked after the elderly.

However the population is rapidly aging with more and more older people in the population and adult children now have less time to look after their ageing parents. The social relationships in the villages which provided a safety net for elderly folk now no longer exist and the burden of looking after aging parents have fallen on the nuclear family. Today we constantly hear reports in the media of aging parents being abandoned on the streets or neglected at home by their offspring. We rarely heard of such things a few decades ago. I believe the necessary support services and institutions to help people to look after aged family members should be put in place as expeditiously as possible.

MahindaRajapaksa

Former President
